Exploring Mars' Ancient Terrain

According to НВ — Техно: For over five years, NASA's Perseverance rover has been conducting in-depth investigations on the surface of Mars. Recently, the rover arrived at the Lac de Charme plateau, situated beyond the Jezero Crater rim. Here, it is examining some of the oldest magmatic rocks encountered during its mission. Thanks to enhanced onboard computing power, Perseverance navigates the challenging landscape of deep valleys and rugged ridges with greater precision.

The Lac de Charme Plateau

Located west of Jezero Crater’s elevated rim, the Lac de Charme plateau features dark rock formations that originated either from cooled lava flows or impacts by ancient celestial bodies. The data collected from these rocks will help scientists reconstruct the geological timeline of this region, as these formations predate the river channels and lakes that once filled Jezero Crater. Atanasios Klidaras, a graduate student at Purdue University, explains:

“These rocks formed during a period when early Mars was subjected to intense asteroid bombardment. They hold valuable clues about the planet’s earliest history and offer insights into the development of rocky planets at the dawn of our Solar System.”

The samples and navigational data gathered here are crucial for understanding Mars’ environmental conditions before the emergence of liquid water and potentially life. Researchers hope these findings will clarify how the planet’s climate evolved and identify factors that may have influenced the origin of life on Mars.

Investigations on the Lac de Charme plateau represent a vital advance in deciphering Mars' geological evolution and the processes that might have created habitable environments. Studying these ancient rocks can provide groundbreaking information about the planet’s transformations over billions of years, guiding future missions focused on the search for life and Mars’ historical record.

As Perseverance continues to unveil the mysteries of Mars' geological past, understanding the interactions between water and rock is equally crucial. Recent findings from three distinct phases of water-rock interaction in Jezero Crater provide a complementary perspective on how these processes may have shaped the planet's environment and its potential for supporting life.
