Massive drone attack: over a million Ukrainians left without electricity, water, and heat
Massive drone attack on energy infrastructure
According to ХВИЛЯ: A massive drone attack on the energy infrastructure of Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhia regions on January 7, 2026, left over a million subscribers without electricity, water, and heat. This situation led to a national-level emergency.
As a result of the attack, about 30 thousand subscribers in Kryvyi Rih were left without power. At the time of the attack, winter holidays were taking place in Ukraine, which lasted until January 9 inclusive. In Zaporizhia region, electricity supply was restored by the morning of January 8, but the situation remained complicated.
Restoration and government response
Medical institutions in Dnipropetrovsk switched to generators to ensure a continuous life-saving process. Wastewater management on the Left Bank was supported by alternative power supply, despite all the city's boiler houses being without electricity. Zaporizhia region is actively restoring water and heat supply and has deployed 175 'Points of Invincibility' to support those affected.
Volodymyr Zelensky thanked all repair teams and services that have been working since the night to restore electricity, heat, and water supply.
Oleksii Kuleba noted that over a million subscribers in Dnipropetrovsk were left without electricity, water, and heat. This attack once again highlighted the vulnerability of Ukraine's energy infrastructure amid the ongoing conflict.
This event has become another challenge for Ukraine's energy security, emphasizing the need to strengthen protective measures for energy infrastructure. In the winter conditions and prolonged conflict, such vulnerability can have serious consequences for the population, especially in situations where continuous energy supply is critical for survival. Restoring infrastructure and providing assistance to those affected remain priority tasks for the government and local services.
