Ukraine Implements Emergency Blackouts After Major Russian Strike on Energy Grid
Energy Infrastructure Targeted in Widespread Attack
According to Главком: In a major overnight assault on February 7, Russian forces launched a coordinated attack against Ukraine's energy infrastructure. The strikes targeted thermal power plants (TPPs) and substations, damaging critical 750 kV and 330 kV power lines. Specific facilities hit included the Burshtynska and Dobrotvirska TPPs, causing widespread power outages and infrastructure damage across multiple regions.
To manage the strain on the national grid, emergency power outage schedules were implemented across Ukraine, reaching levels of 4.5 to 5. Special emergency schedules were activated in eastern and northern regions. Ukraine's national energy company, Ukrenergo, activated a request for emergency assistance from Poland to help counter the effects of the attack. These attacks are part of a sustained Russian campaign to degrade Ukraine's civilian infrastructure, particularly during the winter months.
Consequences and Regional Impacts
By the morning of the 8th, firefighters in the Kyiv region were still battling a blaze at a warehouse struck by drones. Around 02:37, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported a 'Shahed' drone strike in the Kholodnohirskyi district. Explosions were heard in Kropyvnytskyi at 02:43. Russian forces also struck a critical infrastructure site in Volyn with drones, where damage was confirmed.
The Ivano-Frankivsk region came under fire from cruise missiles and drones, triggering a series of secondary explosions in Burshtyn. Explosions were reported in Vinnytsia, while in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, drone attacks damaged a utility company's premises, buildings, trolleybuses, and other vehicles.
“As of now, emergency outage schedules of levels 4.5 to 5 have been applied across Ukraine, with special emergency schedules in the eastern and northern regions,” stated Denys Shmyhal.
This incident underscores the ongoing escalation of the conflict, characterized by deliberate strikes on critical civilian infrastructure. The targeting of energy facilities severely impacts daily life, creating significant challenges for maintaining power supply. The need for international assistance highlights the severity of the situation and the importance of external support in stabilizing Ukraine's energy system.
