Ukraine Imposes Hourly Power Cuts After Major Energy Grid Attack

Massive attack on the energy system
В Україні вводять погодинні відключення електроенергії через серйозні атаки на енергетичну інфраструктуру.

Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure Hit by Major Assault

According to Главком: Ukraine's power grid came under a massive combined missile and drone attack overnight and into the morning of March 14. This assault on critical infrastructure has resulted in widespread power outages for consumers and forced the implementation of scheduled electricity consumption limits. These attacks are part of a sustained Russian campaign to degrade Ukraine's civilian energy network.

The scale of the attack was significant, impacting energy facilities in Kyiv, the surrounding region, and several other areas. By the morning of March 14, consumers in the following oblasts were without power:

  • Kyiv
  • Kyiv Oblast
  • Cherkasy
  • Kirovohrad
  • Kharkiv
  • Zaporizhzhia
  • Dnipropetrovsk

Starting at 08:00, these regions have introduced power limitation schedules for industry and hourly emergency blackouts for all categories of consumers. These restrictions will remain in effect until the end of the day. Residents are advised to use high-power electrical appliances between 11:00 and 16:00, while the peak evening consumption period is expected from 17:00 to 22:00.

The massive attack forced changes to the timing and scope of the consumption restriction measures. Representatives of Ukrenergo, the national power company, emphasized:

“Due to the massive attack, the timing and scope of consumption restriction measures have been forcibly changed today. In part of Ukraine's regions, power limitation schedules for industry and hourly outages for all consumer categories have been introduced from 08:00. These restrictions will be in effect until the end of the current day. You can check the probable outage schedules for your address on the official pages of your regional power distribution company.”

In a separate incident on March 14, the Russian army struck a commuter train in the Kharkiv region with a drone, injuring the train driver and assistant driver with shrapnel wounds. The previous night, in the Kryvyi Rih district, Russia also used a drone to attack a station area, damaging a locomotive. Ukrenergo reminds consumers: “However, if hourly outages are currently in effect in your region, please use electricity as sparingly as possible. When power is restored according to the schedule, avoid switching on several high-power appliances simultaneously.”

Power Supply Situation in Ukraine

Consequently, the power supply situation in Ukraine remains difficult, and consumers should adhere to the recommendations of energy companies.

This assault is part of the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, in which energy infrastructure has become a primary target for deliberate attacks. The widespread blackouts and implementation of consumption schedules underscore the severity of the situation, which impacts daily civilian life and economic activity across the country. It is crucial for consumers to follow utility company guidance to avoid further strain on the damaged grid during this challenging period.
