Lithuania Condemns Russia’s Missile Strikes on Ukraine

According to Главком: Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys has strongly condemned Russia’s recent missile and drone attacks on Ukraine, labeling the actions as terrorism and evidence of Moscow’s battlefield failures. He urged the international community to ramp up support for Ukraine, tighten sanctions, and isolate the aggressors. The strikes, which took place overnight on June 2, caused significant damage and loss of life in Ukraine.

Details of the Attacks and Their Impact

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russia launched 656 attack drones and 73 missiles against Ukraine. The campaign specifically targeted energy infrastructure, particularly in the Kharkiv region and critical facilities in the city of Kharkiv. The following regions also came under fire:

  • Kyiv Oblast
  • Mykolaiv Oblast
  • Zaporizhzhia Oblast
  • Poltava Oblast
  • Sumy Oblast
  • Chernihiv Oblast
  • Khmelnytskyi Oblast

The primary target was Kyiv, while Dnipro, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and the Poltava region also came under heavy bombardment. Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that 13 people were killed and over 100 wounded. Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed the strikes were carried out with long-range precision weapons, including hypersonic missiles.

'This latest wave of terror is yet another reminder that the Kremlin continues to rely on attacks on civilians because it is losing on the battlefield.' Kęstutis Budrys

Budrys added that 'the Kremlin must understand that every act of terror will increase its own costs, deepen its isolation, and strengthen support for Ukraine.' In response, he called for several key actions:

  • Increased military support for the Armed Forces of Ukraine
  • Maximum intensification of sanctions pressure on the Russian Federation
  • Complete political and economic isolation of the aggressor nations
  • Confiscation of frozen Russian assets for the benefit of Ukraine
  • Acceleration of Ukraine’s EU accession by immediately opening all negotiation clusters

These statements from Lithuania’s top diplomat highlight the growing urgency for international backing as the conflict with Russia escalates. Calls for stronger military aid and tougher sanctions reflect rising global concern over the security situation in the region. Lithuania’s stance, along with that of other nations, could shape future developments, including the level of Western support for Ukraine and potential shifts in Russian policy.
