Russian Mass Attack Disrupts Ukrainian Railways, Causing Casualties and Route Changes
Rail Infrastructure Targeted in Overnight Assault
According to Главком: A large-scale Russian attack in the early hours of March 7th damaged railway infrastructure across Ukraine, forcing the national rail operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, to reroute numerous trains. The assault impacted regions including Kharkiv, Kyiv, the Kyiv region, and the city of Novodnistrovsk. This attack on critical civilian infrastructure resulted in casualties, with both deaths and injuries reported.
In the regions of Rivne, Vinnytsia, and Zhytomyr, several trains have been compelled to alter their paths. To maintain transport services on the affected lines, reserve diesel locomotives have been deployed. Inspection and repair work on the damaged infrastructure is now underway to restore normal train operations.
Widespread Impact and Civilian Harm
In Kharkiv, a missile strike destroyed a residential building in the Kyivskyi district, injuring at least ten people, including three children, and killing two. A series of powerful explosions, caused by various types of missiles and attack drones, were recorded in Kyiv and its surrounding region. Explosions were also heard in Novodnistrovsk following an assault involving cruise missiles and attack drones.
Ukrzaliznytsia stated: 'Due to the massive enemy attack and damage to railway infrastructure, a number of Ukrzaliznytsia trains in the Rivne, Vinnytsia, and Zhytomyr regions are being forced to change their routes.'
The company added, 'Our monitoring groups managed to protect dozens of passenger trains from over a hundred drones and missiles. We apologize for the forced stops and several nighttime evacuations-the worst was avoided thanks to the coordinated work of railway workers and the proficiency of the Defense Forces.'
This incident underscores the ongoing conflict's severe toll on Ukraine's civilian infrastructure, particularly its vital rail network for passengers and freight. These attacks are part of a wider Russian campaign targeting energy and transport links. While the damage is likely to cause further transport delays with economic repercussions, the efforts by Ukrzaliznytsia and the Defense Forces demonstrate active measures to mitigate loss of life and protect the population amidst the fighting.
