Russia’s Assault on Ukraine: Scale of Aggression and Fallout

According to Главком: Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine, deploying 524 drones and 22 missiles. This widespread aggression caused destruction across eight regions, including Dnipro and Odesa. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on Europe to bolster its air defense systems and stressed the urgent need for Ukraine to develop its own anti-ballistic missile capabilities. The attacks mark a significant escalation in hostilities, with civilian infrastructure bearing the brunt of the onslaught.

What Happened in Dnipro and Odesa

Russian forces are using ballistic missiles to strike Ukrainian targets. The assault on the Dnipropetrovsk region lasted over six hours, starting on the evening of May 17 and continuing into the early hours of May 18. A missile strike damaged an apartment building in Dnipro, and around 2:30 AM, missiles hit a residential neighborhood in the city. As of the latest reports, dozens of people have been injured, including two children-a two-year-old girl and a ten-year-old boy-who are receiving outpatient care. In total, 18 people were harmed by the shelling, with eight hospitalized-four women and four men. Medical staff describe their condition as moderate. Approximately 20 high-rise buildings and private homes were damaged, along with two kindergartens, a gymnasium, a mosque, a university building, and a tram line.

The attacks also hit Odesa, where drone strikes were recorded. Two local residents sustained injuries, and in the Prymorskyi and Kyivskyi districts, several residential buildings were damaged, including three-story structures whose roofs were destroyed. A one-story house was completely demolished, and a city lyceum and kindergarten were also damaged.

“The region’s energy infrastructure and residential buildings came under fire. Drones struck Odesa, and one of the unmanned aircraft hit a vessel belonging to China. The Russians couldn’t have been unaware of which ship was at sea. Overall, destruction occurred in eight regions, and we currently know of dozens of injured people across the country, including children.”

The president emphasized, “Europe must have its own anti-ballistic systems and be self-sufficient against these threats. We repeat once again: we need our own anti-ballistic defense and the strengthening of Ukraine’s air defense right now. This week is about working with partners to enhance the protection of lives.”

Oleksandr Ganzha, a medical service representative, stated: “Eight people have been hospitalized. This includes four women and four men. Doctors assess their condition as moderate. All victims are receiving the necessary care.”

This report highlights the intensification of Russian military actions and their impact on Ukrainian civilians. The strikes on major cities like Dnipro and Odesa underscore the ongoing conflict and the critical need to strengthen Ukraine’s defensive capabilities. President Zelenskyy’s appeals to European partners for enhanced air defense reflect the importance of international support in the face of aggression. Heightened readiness for further attacks could be key to ensuring safety and protecting civilians in Ukraine.

In light of the recent escalation, it's crucial to consider the broader context of Russia's ongoing military campaign. Just last week, President Zelenskyy reported that over 3,170 drones and 1,300 guided bombs were launched by Russian forces within a single week. This alarming frequency of attacks underscores the urgent need for enhanced defensive measures.
