Ukraine's Energy Grid Crippled by Major Russian Assault, Zelenskyy Details Nationwide Impact
Consequences of a Massive Strike on Energy Infrastructure
According to ХВИЛЯ: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has detailed the fallout from a massive Russian assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which caused power outages across virtually the entire country. The attack, which inflicted severe damage on energy facilities, was deliberately targeted at objects critical to the operation of Ukrainian nuclear power stations. Russia employed over 400 drones, a significant portion of which were 'Shahed' models, as well as nearly 40 missiles of various types. This coordinated barrage represents one of the largest attacks on Ukraine's civilian energy grid since the full-scale invasion began.
Following a situation meeting with reports from all regions, Zelenskyy stated that the strikes had serious consequences for the power supply in the following areas:
- Kyiv
- Kharkiv
- Chernihiv
- Sumy
- Poltava Oblast
- Cherkasy Oblast
- Dnipropetrovsk Oblast
- Southern Oblasts
- Donetsk Oblast
- Zaporizhzhia
- Kropyvnytskyi
- Zhytomyr Oblast
- Vinnytsia Oblast
- Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast
- Rivne Oblast
- Volyn
- Lviv Oblast
The meeting focused on measures to address the consequences and ensure energy stability in these regions.
Measures to Improve the Situation
To improve the situation, the Ministry of Internal Affairs is creating additional teams to work at energy facilities in western oblasts. In the coming days, regional leaders, the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and the Ministry of Defense are to provide additional reinforcement for mobile fire groups. The government has received specific tasks to expand support programs for the population, and diplomats have been instructed to accelerate work with partners on support packages for air defense systems and energy resilience.
Zelenskyy emphasized that the situation reflects Russia's overall attitude toward the conflict and its true intentions: 'This reflects Russia's general attitude toward the situation and their true intentions. As of today, Russia is not demonstrating a readiness to end this war in the near future.'
This massive strike on energy infrastructure signals an escalation of the conflict and Russia's attempt to destabilize Ukraine's power system, which is critical for sustaining civilian life. In response, Ukrainian authorities are taking steps to restore energy supply and bolster defensive capabilities, underscoring their resolve to counter the aggression. Ensuring energy resilience and securing support from international partners remain vital for the country's survival under wartime conditions.
