Half a Thousand Evacuated as Massive Forest Fire Rages on Croatia’s Brač Island

Wildfires Sweep Across Croatia and Germany

According to УНІАН — Туризм: On September 10, 2023, a large-scale forest fire broke out on Brač Island in Croatia, forcing the evacuation of around 500 residents. The blaze rapidly spread near the village of Ložišće, engulfing over 3,000 hectares. Firefighting efforts involved 223 firefighters supported by 69 fire trucks.

Evacuations were carried out using a variety of vessels including fishing boats, speedboats, Croatian Navy ships, and port authority vessels. This deployment of maritime resources to rescue those trapped on the island has raised concerns among tourists. Brač Airport, which handles roughly seven seasonal flights weekly and maintains regular domestic service to Zagreb via Croatia Airlines, remains operational but travelers are advised to stay informed.

As of September 16, 2023, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has not issued specific travel warnings regarding the Croatian wildfires but highlights that such fires are common during the country's hot, dry summers. Visitors are urged to exercise caution when traveling through forested areas due to the unpredictable and dangerous nature of wildfires. Additionally, causing a wildfire, even accidentally, can result in fines up to €20,000.

Fire Emergency in Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia

Meanwhile, in Germany’s state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the village of Hee, home to around 1,800 people, was evacuated because of a nearby forest fire. The flames approached within approximately 200 meters of the settlement, prompting local authorities to establish a crisis management team to handle the emergency.

These recent wildfires in Croatia and Germany underscore the growing threat of natural disasters across Europe, exacerbated by climate change. The importance of preparedness and swift emergency response is increasingly critical, as such fires not only endanger local communities but also impact key tourist regions vital to the economy.
