German Chancellor reflects on NATO summit outcomes in Ankara

According to Главком: Following the NATO summit held in Ankara on July 7–8, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz highlighted a renewed sense of unity within the alliance and a growing European commitment to collective security. He emphasized that U.S. President Donald Trump showed attentiveness to all NATO members, fostering an atmosphere of mutual dedication. Merz noted Germany's constructive role in strengthening the alliance, pointing out that roughly one-third of summit participants specifically acknowledged the federal government's contributions.

Key summit priorities

The main topics discussed at the summit included:

  • increasing defense spending among NATO member states;
  • bolstering the European pillar of security;
  • continuing support for Ukraine.

Friedrich Merz stated that

“my expectations for this summit in Ankara were more than fulfilled. I see, especially from the European side, a new momentum.”

He also stressed that

“the room was filled not only with a genuine sense of mutual commitment and shared responsibility, but also with a new awareness of European responsibility.”

The chancellor noted that Trump remained present throughout the entire session and listened carefully to representatives from even the smaller NATO nations. 'President Trump was present without exception for the whole meeting and stayed in the room the entire time. I noticed again that he listens attentively to representatives of small NATO states, takes in what is happening even in the smaller member countries, and approaches this with great sympathy,' Merz remarked.

Overall, the Ankara summit demonstrated the efforts of NATO member states to reinforce the alliance and intensify cooperation-an especially critical task given current security challenges. Merz emphasized that 'about a third of the speakers specifically mentioned the role of the federal government and the Federal Republic of Germany. This shows that our efforts, together with Canada, to bring a new spirit to NATO are indeed paying off.'

The Ankara summit proved to be a pivotal moment for NATO's development, particularly in light of the contemporary threats facing the alliance. Increased defense spending and a sharper focus on European security underscore the seriousness of member states' intentions to strengthen their defense capabilities. This also highlights the importance of supporting Ukraine amid the security challenges confronting Europe.

In light of the discussions at the NATO summit, it is crucial to consider Turkey's active role in seeking a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. President Erdoğan has expressed a strong commitment to end the war, which aligns with NATO's collective security goals.
