The Loss of Mykola Karpiuk Marks a Major Blow to Ukraine’s National Movement

The Tragic Death of Mykola Karpiuk

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: Mykola Karpiuk, a prominent activist, co-founder of the Ukrainian National Assembly – Ukrainian National Self-Defense (UNA-UNSO), and former political prisoner of the Kremlin, was killed on the frontline. This news was confirmed on September 20 by Artur Palatny, Yuriy Honcharenko, and Viktor Yahun. Karpiuk was 62 years old. Born in the Rivne region, he played a vital role in several pivotal political movements in Ukraine, including the "Ukraine Without Kuchma" campaign, the Orange Revolution, and the Revolution of Dignity. After these events, he served as the deputy head of the political bloc "Right Sector."

In 2014, Karpiuk was abducted in Russia. On May 26, 2016, a court in Chechnya sentenced him to 22.5 years in prison on charges of participating in combat in Chechnya-allegations that lacked solid evidence. Alongside him, Stanislav Klykh was sentenced to 20 years under the same accusations. Both were accused of killing Russian soldiers in Grozny during 1994–1995. According to Russian investigators, Karpiuk and Klykh were UNA-UNSO members who fought against Russian federal forces in Chechnya, but the prosecution failed to present proof of their presence there at the claimed time.

Prisoner Exchange and Karpiuk’s Enduring Legacy

On September 7, 2019, Ukraine and Russia conducted a prisoner swap involving 35 individuals from each side. Among those returned to Ukraine were 11 unlawfully convicted citizens, including Karpiuk. The exchange also included 24 Ukrainian sailors seized by Russia near the Kerch Strait in November 2018. Karpiuk’s death represents a profound loss for Ukraine’s national movement.

Yuriy Honcharenko reflected on Karpiuk’s passing: "Mykola Karpiuk has died... This is a loss beyond words or measurement. He dedicated his life to Ukraine without ever seeking fame, money, or positions. He endured torture in Russian prisons. He was kidnapped in 2014 because his significance to Ukraine’s national movement was undeniable."

Viktor Yahun added, "He made his choice long ago and remained loyal to it under all circumstances. Life dealt him many hardships that would have broken others, but he stayed true to himself-straightforward, principled, and deeply committed."

Karpiuk’s death highlights the critical role he played in Ukraine’s struggle for sovereignty and national identity. As an active participant in major political upheavals, his life became a testament to unwavering dedication and patriotism. His passing is not only a personal tragedy for those close to him but also a significant setback for the national movement he championed.
