The UK's Stance on Ending the War in Ukraine

According to ХВИЛЯ: In an article for The Telegraph, UK Defence Secretary John Healey argued that 2026 must be the year the war in Ukraine concludes. He outlined a plan involving the deployment of multinational peacekeeping forces to Ukraine following a peace agreement. Healey revealed that a 70-person headquarters is already operational to prepare for this scenario. This proposal comes as Western allies seek a credible path to a sustainable peace, not just a frozen conflict.

Last month in Paris, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer signed a declaration of intent with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron. The UK government has allocated £200 million to prepare troops for a potential peacekeeping mission. Furthermore, the UK and Ukraine have initiated large-scale joint production of an interceptor drone named 'Vosmyinh' (Octopus).

The Frontline Situation and International Support

During a visit to Lviv, Healey was within a 15-minute drive of a Russian ballistic missile strike site. That same night, 90 Shahed drones were launched at Kyiv, with 21 targeting residential buildings. According to the UK Ministry of Defence, Russia has suffered over one million personnel killed, wounded, or missing, with 250,000 of those killed or permanently missing.

Healey also noted that interest rates in Russia have reached 15 percent. Russia is recruiting 17,000 North Korean soldiers, along with volunteers from Cuba, Nigeria, and Senegal. On certain sections of the front, the casualty ratio stands at 25 Russian soldiers for every one Ukrainian.

At the 33rd meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, 50 nations pledged over $35 billion in commitments. The meeting was convened and co-chaired by Healey and German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius at NATO headquarters.

“I am proud of our British leadership. I am determined to make 2026 the year this war ends.”

The UK Defence Secretary's statements highlight the West's increasing support for Ukraine and a concerted push to end the conflict through diplomatic and peacekeeping frameworks. The signed agreements and substantial funding demonstrate the international community's readiness to engage actively in stabilizing the region. Simultaneously, Healey's remarks on Russian losses and the recruitment of foreign volunteers underscore the conflict's protracted and complex nature, demanding sustained attention and effort from global partners.
