Potential Return to Military Service

According to Главком: Ukraine's Minister of Education and Science, Oksen Lisovyi, has indicated he would be prepared to return to military service if he is removed from his current position. He clarified, however, that he has not submitted a resignation letter and has not seen any official motion from Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko. Lisovyi acknowledged that a parliamentary resolution concerning his dismissal has been introduced by lawmaker Anton Yatsenko, but he stressed that no one has discussed the possibility of his removal with him directly. The Verkhovna Rada may take up the matter of his dismissal as early as next week.

Military Background and Personnel Developments

Appointed as Ukraine's education minister in March 2023, Lisovyi also shared details about his military service. In 2022, following Russia's full-scale invasion, he volunteered to join the 95th Separate Air Assault Brigade. Emphasizing his sense of duty, Lisovyi stated:

“This is service, and I motivate myself by the fact that I am mobilized: I either serve in the military, or I work here.” - Oksen Lisovyi

Separately, lawmaker Larysa Bilozir reported that Lisovyi's potential dismissal could be reviewed next week. The agenda for the Committee on Education, Science, and Innovation includes a personnel item, highlighting the timeliness of this topic. Meanwhile, a group of parliamentarians has registered a draft law that would reduce the number of mandatory National Multi-Subject Test subjects from three to two, including a proposal to remove mathematics from the required list.

The situation surrounding the education minister carries weight not only for the academic sector but for Ukrainian society as a whole. Given the active discussions about personnel changes and proposed reforms to the education system, the unfolding events could significantly shape the country's educational policy direction. It remains to be seen how the Verkhovna Rada will act on Lisovyi's appointment or dismissal, and what impact this will have on ongoing educational reforms in the nation.

As the situation with the education minister evolves, it's important to note that recent developments in parliament have raised concerns regarding his potential removal in light of the ongoing exam scandal.
