Russia lost the elections to the Maritime Organization: what does it mean
According to МЗС: Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha reported that Russia did not make it to the Council of the International Maritime Organization. This is another defeat for Russia following failures at UNESCO and the OPCW, indicating its international isolation.
'Russia systematically violates international law, conducts attacks on civilian vessels, destroys port infrastructure and uses a shadow fleet, disregarding safety norms,' emphasized the Foreign Minister. Therefore, Moscow cannot be part of the executive body of the International Maritime Organization.
'Today's vote confirmed that the international community stands against illegal behavior at sea and supports the supremacy of international law. We express our gratitude to all partners who, through joint efforts, have achieved this result,' he added.
The Minister stressed that there is no place for Russia in the governing bodies of international organizations. Ukraine will continue to fight for compliance with the norms and principles of international law.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha emphasized the failed attempts of Russia to join the Council of the International Maritime Organization and described its behavior as illegal and dangerous. However, noting the positive outcome of the vote, he mentioned that the international community stands against violations of international law and will continue to work to ensure safety at sea.
