Ukraine’s Defense Ministry Clears NEO-1 Mine-Clearing Robot for Military Use
NEO-1 Robotic System for Demining Operations
According to Главком: The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has officially certified and approved the NEO-1 robotic hardware-software complex for deployment within the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Designed for remote detection of explosive hazards, this advanced system aims to significantly enhance safety during demining efforts, especially under the challenging conditions of modern warfare. As Ukraine continues to face extensive landmine contamination, such robotic solutions are critical for protecting both soldiers and civilians.
Technical Specifications of the NEO-1
Measuring 85 by 81 cm with a height of 41 cm, the NEO-1 platform is compact and easy to transport. Weighing roughly 60 kg, it can be lifted from a pickup truck bed or car trunk by just two service members. The platform reaches a top speed of 7 km/h, and its battery capacity supports up to 8 hours of autonomous operation. Beyond demining, the NEO-1 can carry payloads of up to 70 kg or tow a loaded cart weighing up to 120 kg.
Control range extends to 500 meters, with an optional upgrade to 3 km. The system is equipped with built-in video cameras offering 10x optical and 3x digital zoom. Its metal detector has a scanning width of 139 cm and can detect objects buried up to 60 cm deep, greatly improving the efficiency of locating explosive devices.
In a related move, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has allocated an additional 10.84 billion Ukrainian hryvnias to bolster the country’s defense capabilities. These funds come from the remaining balance of the state budget’s special fund.
'The NEO-1 RPC is a modern, unique development by Ukrainian arms designers, intended for demining territories with minimal risk to the operator. The platform was built specifically to meet the requests of military personnel on the front lines, taking into account the realities of contemporary warfare.' Ministry of Defense of Ukraine
Overall, the introduction of the NEO-1 robotic system, along with additional defense funding, underscores Ukraine’s commitment to modernizing its armed forces and improving safety amid ongoing military conflicts. This also highlights the importance of adopting new technologies to reduce risks during mine clearance-a crucial task for ensuring civilian safety in post-conflict zones.
As the Ukrainian military enhances its technological capabilities, the successful completion of thousands of missions utilizing ground robots showcases the effectiveness of robotic systems in combat operations. This trend underscores the importance of innovations like the NEO-1, which aim to improve safety and operational efficiency on the battlefield.
