New Drone Procurement Announced by Ukraine's Defense Ministry

According to Мін. Оборони: Ukraine's Defense Minister, Yevhenii Khmara, has unveiled a procurement drive that includes a tender for long-range strike drones and a separate tender for FPV kamikaze drones equipped with fiber-optic communication. This is the first time Kyiv has put out tenders for these specific UAV types based on their tactical and technical specifications. The ministry's aim is to increase Ukraine's capacity to strike Russian military infrastructure.

Drone Categories and Mission Profiles

The long-range UAV tender covers multiple classes, differentiated by how far they can fly and how heavy a warhead they can carry. Khmara explained that "Deep strike" refers to a category of long-range attack drones built to engage targets at strategic depth behind enemy lines.

"We are scaling up the ability of our fighters to hit the enemy across various ranges-from tactical depth on the front line to strategic depth on Russian soil," he said.

The fiber-optic FPV kamikaze drones are intended to work effectively when Russian electronic warfare systems are highly active. The defense minister added that

"the constant expansion of such capabilities is a key component of Ukraine's strategy." He also stressed that "strengthening the armed forces is the Defense Ministry's top priority."

These tenders reflect how Ukraine's Defense Ministry is approaching military modernization in light of current threats. With intense fighting and rapid advances in drone technology, Ukraine is working to sustain its defenses and improve its ability to operate across a wide span of combat distances. The move may also force Russia to rethink its military tactics and adapt its wartime approach.

In a related development, starting from August, the Ministry of Defense plans to enhance military units by incorporating robotic systems and heavy drones. This strategic move aligns with the ongoing efforts to modernize Ukraine's defense capabilities, ensuring that the armed forces remain adaptable in the face of evolving threats.
