U.S. Shifts Focus to Iran, Leaving Ukraine's Peace Process to Stagnate
The Stalled Path to Peace in Ukraine
According to ХВИЛЯ: The U.S.-initiated peace process for Ukraine is losing momentum as the White House diverts its attention to a new conflict with Iran. This shift is primarily driven by the Trump administration's waning focus on Ukraine amid escalating Middle East tensions. Consequently, the European Union has been warned of delays in receiving promised American military aid, including air defense systems, as priority is given to allies in the Middle East.
Russia is capitalizing on this situation, benefiting from rising oil prices as a suspension of U.S. sanctions allows it to earn up to $150 million in additional daily revenue. The Kremlin has openly acknowledged the stalled peace talks, emphasizing that Moscow shows no readiness for compromise and continues to advance demands unacceptable to Kyiv. Furthermore, Russia is rejecting attempts by European nations to join the negotiation process. This development is particularly concerning for European security, as a protracted conflict directly impacts the continent's stability.
Negotiations and Their Aftermath
The last trilateral talks were held in mid-February in Geneva, but a subsequent round planned for Abu Dhabi was canceled following U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted:
“A pause in the negotiations has indeed emerged. The Americans have other priorities, and that is understandable.” - Dmitry Peskov
Meanwhile, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas highlighted that 'competition is emerging for the same resources, both in the Middle East and in Ukraine.'
These events indicate that amid new global tensions, the Ukrainian peace process faces significant challenges requiring urgent resolution. The diminishing U.S. attention to Ukraine risks further escalation of the conflict, as Russia exploits the situation to pursue its interests without any commitment to compromise. This underscores the critical need for sustained international support to revive the peace dialogue and restore stability to the region.
