Russian Athletes Granted Competition Access

According to Главком: The International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) has authorized Russian athletes, some of whom are members of the military, to participate in its events. Vladyslav Heraskevych, a leading Ukrainian skeleton athlete, has voiced serious concerns regarding this decision, noting that seven Russian skeleton athletes were granted neutral status in mid-December.

Athletes with Neutral Status

The athletes who have received this neutral status include:

  • Viktoriia Fettel
  • Olena Frolova
  • Polina Kniazeva
  • Polina Tiurina
  • Daniil Romanov
  • Vladislav Semenov
  • Eremii Zikov

Several of these competitors are confirmed to be serving in the Russian armed forces. For instance, Daniil Romanov is a private in the CSKA/Sochi sports company and is also a follower of Dmitry Medvedev's Instagram account. This decision comes amid ongoing international scrutiny of Russian participation in global sports.

Heraskevych further observed that following the return of neutral athletes, the IBSF's social media channels have disabled comments, suggesting the federation finds the situation uncomfortable. He expressed alarm over inadequate safety measures at competitions and a lack of transparency in the process of vetting Russian athletes for compliance with neutrality conditions. The Ukrainian skeleton leader emphasized that his team has provided the IBSF with evidence of pro-war support from these neutral athletes but has received no response.

The IBSF's ruling to permit Russian athletes back into international competition has sparked significant controversy, particularly against the backdrop of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Vladyslav Heraskevych's statements highlight the profound ethical and safety dilemmas posed by the inclusion of military personnel in sports.

This development could have lasting implications for the relationship between Ukrainian and international sports federations, as issues of neutrality and event security become increasingly urgent.
