Challenges in Mobilizing Foreign Nationals for Ukraine's Armed Forces

According to ХВИЛЯ: During a broadcast with political analyst Yuriy Romanenko, Anton Chorny, an instructor and recruiter for the 'Shkval' battalion of the 59th Brigade, raised concerns about mobilizing foreign nationals currently held in Ukrainian correctional colonies. The primary obstacle is a lack of the necessary documentation required for formal enlistment at military recruitment centers. This issue persists even though these individuals were previously identified, arrested, and processed through the legal system for their criminal cases.

Chorny pointed out that the foreigners slated for mobilization had been arrested and identified in the context of criminal investigations.

"They were imprisoned somehow, they were apprehended as the perpetrators. So, bluntly speaking, a prosecutor got a bonus for solving the crime, some detective got one,"

commented Anton Chorny, highlighting the overlap between legal and military procedures. This situation is part of Ukraine's broader effort to bolster its defense forces amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.

An Urgent Need for Reform

The mobilization of foreigners from correctional colonies thus requires an urgent solution, as the absence of paperwork complicates their formal enlistment into the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). This administrative bottleneck could potentially impact the overall mobilization campaign.
