Moldova Extends Temporary Protection for Ukrainians Through 2027

According to Главком: Moldovan Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu visited Kyiv for talks with Ukrainian leadership. The Moldovan government has decided to provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine and has extended the temporary protection status for Ukrainians in the Republic of Moldova until March 1, 2027. This move underscores Moldova's continued support for its neighbor despite facing its own significant economic and security pressures.

Arriving in Kyiv on February 10, Alexandru Munteanu held scheduled negotiations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. During this meeting, it was announced that humanitarian aid, assembled from Moldova's State Reserve and resources from specific units of its Ministry of Internal Affairs, would be provided. This aid package includes:

  • goods for the energy sector;
  • goods for the medical sector.

These supplies are critically important for supporting Ukraine amid its ongoing challenges.

'On behalf of the people of Moldova, I am sending a clear signal of solidarity. We support Ukraine as neighbors and friends, united by our commitment to a just and durable peace and our common future in the EU.' Alexandru Munteanu

In a related development, Moldovan President Maia Sandu was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by a member of the Norwegian parliament. Sandu expressed gratitude for the attention given to Moldova, noting that many people deserve the peace prize, particularly Ukrainians who have returned home from Russia: 'I certainly appreciate it and I am grateful that people are watching our country, that they value our courage and resilience.'

The extension of temporary protection until 2027 demonstrates Moldova's long-term commitment to aiding those displaced by the war in Ukraine. The humanitarian assistance aims to alleviate the conflict's impact and support the Ukrainian people during a difficult period. These actions strengthen the bonds between Moldova and Ukraine, highlighting the importance of regional cooperation and solidarity. President Sandu's Nobel Peace Prize nomination could further draw international attention to the regional situation and underscore the efforts of neighboring countries in supporting Ukraine.
