Relocating Ukrainian Border Checkpoints to Moldovan Soil

According to УНІАН — Туризм: In response to ongoing Russian assaults near their shared border, Moldova is considering moving Ukrainian border checkpoints onto Moldovan territory. Daniela Misail-Nikitin, Moldova's Interior Minister, revealed that discussions with Ukrainian officials are underway to establish joint border control operations. She highlighted that "currently, there are two border crossings under consideration based on agreements reached with Ukraine. Looking ahead, we will evaluate additional checkpoints depending on the risk level of incidents that have already occurred."

As part of enhanced security protocols, Moldova has withdrawn its border officers and customs personnel from four checkpoints located within Ukraine. Ukrainian Border Guard Service representative Andriy Demchenko confirmed that in September, operations at Ukrainian checkpoints were temporarily halted during aerial alerts. These measures reflect heightened vigilance and increased control on both sides, driven by the persistent threat of Russian attacks.

Joint Checkpoints and the Strained Border Situation with Poland

In late September, Ukraine also explored the possibility of establishing joint checkpoints with neighboring countries. Poland, in particular, announced its readiness to conduct border control exclusively on its side if security threats intensify. On October 21, vehicle crossings at the Poland-Ukraine border experienced delays reaching up to nine days. These significant backlogs are a direct consequence of ongoing Russian military actions, which continue to destabilize the region.

The growing cooperation between Ukraine and Moldova on border security underscores the serious challenges both nations face amid escalating Russian aggression. Implementing joint border controls could greatly improve safety and monitoring on both fronts. Meanwhile, the situation at the Polish border illustrates how external threats strain border infrastructure and disrupt cross-border movement, necessitating swift and coordinated responses from neighboring governments.

As Moldova and Ukraine strengthen their border security measures in light of ongoing threats, the situation at the Poland-Ukraine border has also worsened, with delays reaching up to nine days. This has prompted Poland to consider relocating its border checks to enhance control.
