French Voluntary Military Service Sees Application Overload

According to Главком: France has witnessed a significant surge in applications for its voluntary military service program aimed at young people aged 18 to 25. The French armed forces have received more than 2,300 applications, yet only 1,800 positions are available. Currently, around 1,600 applications are still under review, while 260 candidates have already been assigned roles.

General Arnaud Goujon stated: 'We currently have over 2,300 applications, of which about 1,600 are still being evaluated, and 260 candidates have already received their assignments.'

Program Details and Future Expansion Plans

The voluntary military service program requires a 10-month commitment. Recruits will receive a monthly stipend of approximately 800 euros, along with free housing during their service. About 90% of applicants choose combat-oriented roles, such as:

  • infantry
  • artillery
  • engineering units

However, positions are also available in:

  • logistics
  • intelligence
  • technical maintenance

French authorities plan to expand the program to 3,000 participants by 2026 and to 10,000 by 2030. Women make up about 22% of applicants, highlighting a growing interest in military service among young people.

This situation underscores the rising appeal of military careers among French youth, potentially driven by various social and political factors. The government is responding to this demand with plans to increase program capacity, signaling possible strategic shifts in defense policy. The high proportion of female applicants also points to evolving traditional gender roles within the military, which could reshape the future composition of the armed forces.
