Honoring the Memory of Valeriy Garzha

According to МВС: On October 20, 2024, Junior Sergeant Valeriy Garzha lost his life in the Donetsk region during a Russian shelling while courageously rescuing a wounded comrade suffering from a severe concussion. Valeriy had been serving in the State Border Guard Service since June 2024. Initially, he was stationed on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border in Volyn, before being reassigned to the 3rd Border Detachment near Hryhorivka in the Bakhmut district.

During his combat watch, Valeriy detected enemy troop movements and alerted his fellow soldiers, which played a crucial role in halting the opposing force. Tragically, he sustained fatal injuries while carrying out the rescue. In recognition of his bravery, he was posthumously awarded the 'Defender of the Fatherland' medal.

Remembering Our Heroes

Ukraine maintains a Memorial Book of the Ministry of Internal Affairs system, which collects the stories of fallen defenders. An online form is available on the official website to submit information about deceased border guards, helping to preserve the legacy of those who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

Valeriy Garzha’s sacrifice exemplifies the courage and dedication of Ukrainian servicemen facing aggression. His heroic actions not only saved a fellow soldier but also embody the steadfast spirit vital to Ukraine's fight for sovereignty. Commemorating heroes like Valeriy through the Memorial Book plays a significant role in society by ensuring that the memory of those who gave their lives for the country’s peace and security endures.
