Frost in Ukraine: electricity may be absent for up to 20 hours a day

Досвід зимових морозів в Україні: можливі тривалі відключення електроенергії до 20 годин на добу.

Power outages in Ukraine during frosts

According to ХВИЛЯ: In Ukraine, during frosts, power outages of up to 16-20 hours a day are possible due to increased load on the energy system. The drop in temperature affects electricity consumption, which, in turn, can lead to a significant deficit. At -5 degrees Celsius, the additional load on the energy system is approximately 1500 MW. If the temperature drops to -10 degrees Celsius, this figure will increase to about 3000 MW.

Situation with electricity deficit

In case of severe frosts, the electricity deficit may increase from a quarter to half of total consumption. For the population, only 20-25% of the required electricity consumption will remain.

Aleksey Kucherenko noted that 'electricity may be absent for 16-20 hours a day.'

This indicates the seriousness of the situation, which may lead to significant inconveniences for the population. Kucherenko also emphasized that 'the situation in energy will be dynamic, and electricity distribution will occur manually.'

This indicates that management bodies will have to coordinate electricity distribution according to current conditions to ensure at least minimal electricity supply. At the same time, most protected transformers survived the last strike on Odesa, which may help stabilize the situation.

In the context of rising cold and potential power outages, it is important to note that the country's energy system continues to face challenges related to increased consumption during frosts. Adapting to such conditions will require active actions from energy companies and management bodies. Citizens should be prepared for possible interruptions in electricity supply and plan their actions according to specialists' recommendations to minimize inconveniences.
