According to Главком: The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has prohibited the Ukrainian team from wearing their competition uniform, which featured a map of Ukraine, at the 2024 Summer Paralympic Games. This decision forced the team to urgently produce and deliver a new set of uniforms. Valeriy Sushkevych, President of Ukraine's National Paralympic Committee, stated that the ban was justified by the IPC on political grounds. This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between international sports bodies and nations affected by geopolitical conflicts.

'No, no, no – this will not do! They said this uniform is political. And they said no one would allow us to go out in such a uniform,' Sushkevych commented.

According to the NPC President, the new uniforms were manufactured under extreme time pressure and were rushed by bus to Italy, where the Ukrainian team was already located. 'We barely managed to make the new uniforms, we barely made it. We urgently transported this new uniform by bus to Italy, where our entire team is already located,' he added, emphasizing that the athletes could have worn the original uniforms had they not been banned.

Opening Ceremony Boycott Announced

Separately, Ukraine has decided to boycott the Games' opening ceremony due to the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes, who are permitted to compete under their national flags. Several other European nations have joined this boycott. In response to these developments, Ukraine's public broadcaster has refused to air the opening ceremony of the 2026 Paralympics, although it will continue to broadcast all competitions featuring Ukrainian athletes. A decision regarding the closing ceremony has not yet been announced.
