Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs and the International Commission on Missing Persons Deepen Cooperation

According to МВС: Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) and the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) are strengthening their joint efforts to identify missing persons. During a meeting between Deputy Interior Minister Leonid Tymchenko and ICMP Director-General Kathryne Bomberger, the parties reviewed their collaborative results, the launch of a Unified Information Platform and a Unified Identification Center, and outlined the next steps in this critical area.

New Identification Platforms and Centers Now Operational

A new Unified Information Platform for persons missing under special circumstances is now live at https://znykli-bezvisti.mvs.gov.ua. A Unified Center for the Identification of Deceased Persons has also been opened. Leonid Tymchenko noted that the ICMP's assistance in collecting DNA samples from relatives abroad significantly accelerates the search and identification process for the missing. This initiative is a crucial part of the broader response to the humanitarian crisis stemming from Russia's full-scale invasion, which has left thousands unaccounted for.

The meeting participants also agreed on a framework for continued joint work, which includes:

  • Expanding the network of forensic laboratories
  • Engaging international experts in repatriation efforts
  • Improving relevant legislation

These measures are designed to enhance the identification process and help resolve cases of missing persons.

The partnership between Ukraine's MIA and the ICMP represents a vital step in addressing the issue of missing persons, particularly in a conflict setting. The launch of these new platforms and centers not only refines the search process but also increases the chances of reconnecting families with their missing loved ones. This work is fundamental to upholding human dignity and can play a significant role in restoring public trust in state institutions and the international organizations active in this field.
