Ukraine’s MFA Responds to Ambassador’s Remarks

According to Рубрика — Політика: Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has reacted to comments on NATO by Valerii Zaluzhnyi, the country’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, saying they were taken out of context. The ministry noted that, in his full quote, Zaluzhnyi was mainly talking about the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), a UK-led multinational security grouping, not about Ukraine joining NATO. Britain is the group’s framework nation and leader.

Speaking at an event for senior diplomats on August 3, Zaluzhnyi said he saw no prospect of Ukraine joining NATO.

“I know NATO very well. For about twelve years, I personally worked to get us to adopt NATO standards and listened every year to tales about how we were about to join. Unfortunately, we will never join it,”

he said.

Ukraine’s Stance on NATO

The Foreign Ministry confirmed that the country’s course toward NATO membership remains unchanged. Officials added that “today there is no other effective collective security system than the one based on the Washington Treaty.” The irreversibility of Ukraine’s European and Euro-Atlantic path was written into the preamble of Ukraine’s Constitution back in 2019.

Thus, Ukraine’s position on NATO stays firm despite individual remarks that might be misread. The Foreign Ministry will keep working toward Euro-Atlantic integration, emphasizing the role of collective security. This situation also highlights the importance of precise communication between diplomatic representatives and government bodies, particularly given the security challenges Ukraine faces on the international stage. By maintaining its Euro-Atlantic course, Ukraine seeks to secure its defense capability and stability in the region.

Amid these discussions, it's essential to note that President Zelenskyy recently announced an increase in support for Ukraine's NATO membership aspirations. This growing backing reflects the ongoing commitment to collective defense and highlights the broader context of Ukraine's security strategy.
