Meeting on Gender Policy Implementation
According to МЗС: Deputy Foreign Minister Maryana Betsa participated in the 13th session of the Commission for Coordinating Interaction among Executive Authorities, which focused on Ukraine’s state gender policy goals for 2026. The meeting was chaired by Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Vsevolod Chentsov, and included the presence of Ukraine’s First Lady, Olena Zelenska.
The discussions centered on the progress made in applying gender policies within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), particularly emphasizing the promotion of women to leadership roles.
Achievements in Gender Equality at the MFA
Currently, the MFA employs 15 women as directors of departments or heads of divisions, representing 52% of senior positions in the central office. Additionally, 28 women hold senior roles at Ukraine’s diplomatic missions abroad, including 14 ambassadors. According to Maryana Betsa, these encouraging figures highlight the ministry’s commitment to fostering equal opportunities in diplomatic service.
The MFA is also actively involved in shaping Ukraine’s National Action Plan up to 2030, aimed at implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security. The Ministry’s Council on Human Rights, Gender Equality, and Diversity ensures coordination between diplomatic services, state bodies, international organizations, and civil society. Efforts are also focused on making diplomatic and consular services accessible and barrier-free, alongside countering violations of international humanitarian and human rights law committed by the Russian Federation.
“In the face of Russian aggression, the MFA’s gender equality initiatives are deeply intertwined with efforts to counter serious breaches of international humanitarian and human rights law by the Russian Federation,” emphasized Maryana Betsa.
This commission meeting marked a significant step in advancing gender policies in Ukraine, addressing not only equality but also the protection of women’s rights amid ongoing challenges.
The session underscored the increasing priority given to gender equality in Ukraine’s geopolitical context. Elevating women into key diplomatic positions is a core part of a broader strategy to ensure equal opportunities and active participation in decision-making related to national security and foreign affairs. Integrating gender policy within the wider framework of human rights reflects Ukraine’s dedication to upholding international standards in this domain.
