Ukraine's Foreign Ministry Responds to Mudryk Incident: Government Cannot Control Private Remarks
Statement from Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs
According to Главком: Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has issued a statement regarding an incident involving footballer Mykhailo Mudryk during an online gaming session. The Chelsea player referenced 'de_volyn' and 'Volyn' (Volhynia), which was perceived as an allusion to historical events. In response to an inquiry from the publication Przegląd Sportowy Onet, the MFA clarified that it does not control the private remarks of individuals in unofficial contexts and is not authorized to initiate disciplinary proceedings against such athletes.
According to information available to the MFA, Mykhailo Mudryk is not a member of the Ukrainian national football team. The incident occurred during a conflict with a Polish player in the game Counter-Strike 2, which resulted in the footballer receiving a 28-day ban on the esports platform Faceit. The ban was triggered by a complaint from Polish players, after which Mudryk stated:
"Volyn will be remembered forever, you bum"
.
The Importance of Respectful Engagement with History
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine expressed understanding of the sensitivity surrounding issues related to the Volyn Tragedy of the 1940s and emphasized the importance of a respectful approach to history. In its statement, the MFA stressed that any remarks which could be perceived as disrespectful to the memory of the tragedy's victims or harmful to the Polish nation are incompatible with this approach. The Ministry called for responsible communication, noting that such incidents should not occur in interactions between Ukrainians and Poles.
Mykhailo Mudryk, for his part, expressed his view on the attitude of some Polish gamers towards Ukrainians, noting that he feels disrespect during games when other players learn of his nationality. He pointed to instances of insults and unpleasantness faced by the Ukrainian community in Poland.
This incident highlights the complexity of Ukrainian-Polish relations, particularly in the context of historical memory. The Volyn Tragedy remains a sensitive topic, and references to it can provoke emotional reactions, leading to conflicts even in informal spaces like online gaming. The need for respectful engagement with history and cultural memory is more relevant than ever, especially given the contemporary challenges both nations face. The historical context of the Volyn Tragedy, a series of ethnic conflicts during World War II, continues to shape bilateral relations today.
