The Chernobyl NPP will start repairs in 2025: what the drone damaged
Planned repair work on the New Safe Confinement at the Chernobyl NPP
According to hvylya.net: In the fall of 2025, temporary repair work is planned to begin on the New Safe Confinement at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. This is due to serious damage to the confinement caused by a drone in February this year. This was reported by the team of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is monitoring the site.
The New Safe Confinement was built to prevent radioactive emissions from the fourth reactor unit, which was damaged in the 1986 disaster, and to protect it from external threats. IAEA experts confirmed the consideration of documentation related to the repair work by the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate.
The IAEA supports Ukraine's initiatives to repair the confinement as part of the agreement signed during the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2025 in Rome last summer.
Expert opinion
The IAEA team is monitoring the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and notes numerous shellings in the industrial zone near the station. Sounds of military actions can also be heard about 1.2 km away from the station.
At other operational reactor units of Ukrainian NPPs - Khmelnytsky, Rivne, South Ukraine, and Chernobyl - air alarms have also been observed almost daily over the past week.
Planned repair work on the New Safe Confinement at the Chernobyl NPP is scheduled for the fall of 2025 due to damage caused by a drone in February. The IAEA noted the necessity for such repairs and supported Ukraine's initiatives on this matter. Within the framework of the agreement signed at the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2025, necessary measures are planned to be taken.
