Mysterious license plates have appeared on the roads: what drivers need to know

According to hvylya.net: In recent years, cars with unusual letter codes on license plates have appeared on Ukrainian roads. This is the result of radical changes in the vehicle registration system, which have severed the connection between license plates and geographical references.

According to information, the Ministry of Internal Affairs signed an order in December 2022 regarding changes to the Requirements for state license plates, which came into effect in January 2023. This document ultimately severed the system where letter series of numbers were linked to administrative and territorial matters of the country.

Until March 2021, each car had numbers with a code of the region where its owner was registered and where the vehicle was most frequently used. Now, new series of plates have been established that go beyond the regional system.

Letters ED or DC on license plates are intended for cars whose sale was concluded using the electronic driver's cabinet in the unified information system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The letter combinations DI or PD are used for vehicle license plates when the purchase transaction was made through the Unified State Portal of Electronic Services, particularly through the mobile application 'Diia'.

Thus, the new vehicle registration system of the Ukrainian register does not imply geographical ties of license plates to specific regions. This means that car owners now have the opportunity to register vehicles without indicating a specific registration region.
