BMW and Trolleybus Collide on Kyiv’s Paton Bridge
Traffic Accident on the Paton Bridge
According to Главком: A collision between a BMW car and a trolleybus has occurred on the Paton Bridge in Kyiv, resulting in casualties. Traffic is disrupted in both directions across the bridge. The incident was reported by the Kyiv Operative Telegram community.
Paton Bridge’s Condition and History
Officially classified as an emergency structure since 2017, the Paton Bridge was deemed critically unsafe following an inspection by the Shymanovsky Institute of Steel Structures. Current restrictions include a ban on truck traffic and a prohibition on using the outermost lanes.
- No trucks allowed;
- Outer lanes closed to all vehicles.
This bridge has a notable history of accidents. In January 2020, a five-car pileup occurred there. In December 2024, a vehicle overturned on the bridge. Additionally, on July 3, 2024, a heavy rainstorm triggered a crash that forced the municipal company Kyivpastrans to temporarily reroute eight trolleybuses and trams.
As a result, conditions on the bridge remain tense, and drivers must exercise extreme caution when crossing this chronically hazardous infrastructure.
The recurring accidents on the Paton Bridge highlight serious safety issues at this transport hub. Given its emergency status, concerns extend beyond drivers to residents who rely on public transit. Authorities need to take action to improve the infrastructure and prevent similar incidents in the future.
