Ukraine's National Guard to Establish New Regiments Focused on Drones, Assault, and Air Defense
New Units Formed Within Ukraine's National Guard
According to Главком: Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko has signed an order authorizing the creation of new specialized regiments within Ukraine's National Guard. This move is a strategic response to bolster the nation's defensive capabilities amid the ongoing conflict. The new formations will include regiments dedicated to unmanned aerial systems (drones), assault operations, and a separate regiment for airspace protection.
A substantial portion of the Interior Ministry's units are already engaged in combat duties on the front lines. Concurrently, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are advancing to the second phase of establishing a corps system, which is also designed to enhance the effectiveness of military operations. Ihor Klymenko noted:
"This approach has already yielded results. Specifically, the corps reform within the Defense Forces, implemented last year, is proving its effectiveness during combat operations."
Key Focus Areas for the New Formations
The new units will concentrate on three primary areas of operation:
- Unmanned Aerial Systems (Drone) Regiments
- Assault Regiments
- A Separate Airspace Protection Regiment
These forces will not only strengthen Ukraine's defensive posture but also contribute to heightened security across the country. In a related security measure, the National Guard is also reinforcing the protection and guarding of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and its exclusion zone, a critical aspect of national security given the site's history and strategic importance.
These developments underscore the Ukrainian government's intensified efforts to enhance the country's defense mechanisms. The establishment of new units, particularly those focused on drone warfare, reflects modern military trends where technology plays a decisive role. Strengthening overall defense capabilities while securing strategic sites like the Chornobyl plant highlights a comprehensive approach to national security under current threats. This restructuring may also signal an intent to deepen cooperation with international partners in receiving military assistance.
