Ukrainian National Guard Officer Detained in $6,000 Bribery Scheme for Fake Disability

National Guard detained for bribery to medics
Офицер Нацгвардії України затриманий за підозрою у злочинній схемі з хабарництва на суму 6,000 доларів за фальшиву інвалідність.

National Guard Unit Commander Apprehended

According to Главком: A commander from a Ukrainian National Guard support unit has been detained for attempting to bribe medical personnel with $6,000. His goal was to obtain a fraudulent Group II disability certificate, which would have allowed him to be discharged from military service despite having no legitimate medical condition to justify it.

The arrest occurred as the officer handed over the first $3,000 installment of the bribe to a member of an expert assessment team. Law enforcement officials documented the crime and uncovered medical documents showing signs of forgery. The suspect has been formally notified of suspicion under Part 3 of Article 369 of Ukraine's Criminal Code, which covers offering an unlawful benefit to a public official. This charge carries a potential penalty of up to eight years in prison.

Ongoing Investigations and Anti-Corruption Efforts

A pre-trial investigation is underway, and a decision on a preventive measure for the detainee is pending. In a separate but related anti-corruption effort, the State Bureau of Investigations has completed a pre-trial investigation into the management of the 'Kutske Forestry' state enterprise. The leadership is accused of organizing illegal logging within the territory of the 'Hutsulshchyna' National Nature Park, and an indictment has already been sent to court.

These cases highlight the intensified work of Ukrainian law enforcement in combating corruption and other offenses. The detention of a National Guard officer underscores the critical need for oversight of public officials, particularly during a time when national security is paramount. This crackdown occurs against the backdrop of Ukraine's broader reform efforts and its ongoing conflict with Russia, where maintaining military integrity is crucial. Simultaneously, the investigation into illegal logging in a national park demonstrates a comprehensive approach to enforcing environmental protection laws and dismantling corrupt schemes in that sector.
