Celebrating 66 Years Since the Opening of Ukraine’s Historic National Circus

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: On November 5, 2026, the National Circus of Ukraine commemorates the 66th anniversary of its iconic building located at Halytska Square in Kyiv. Despite ongoing hardships such as war, air raid alerts, and power outages, the circus continues to stage performances and bring joy to audiences.

The circus building, designed by architect Valentyn Zhukov, was inaugurated on November 5, 1960, with the premiere show "For You, Kyiv Residents!" At its opening, it was the largest circus venue across the Soviet Union. Today, this architectural landmark holds the status of a locally protected monument of architecture and urban planning.

Since 2019, Vladyslav Korniyenko has served as the General Director, emphasizing the vital role of circus arts during wartime:

“War must never strip a child of the right to joy, creativity, happy experiences, and a fulfilling cultural life.” Vladyslav Korniyenko

In October 2026, the National Circus hosted the 3rd All-Ukrainian Festival-Competition of Circus Arts, known as the "Golden Gate Cup." Performers from across Ukraine presented 124 competitive acts, marking a significant milestone for the growth of circus arts in the country.

Additionally, the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine launched an exhibition titled "Performative Art. Circus" in 2026, highlighting the increasing appreciation of circus culture in contemporary Ukrainian society.

Showtimes and Anniversary Festivities

The National Circus holds shows every Saturday and Sunday at 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Special anniversary performances of "Circus of the New Generation" are scheduled for November 7 and 8, 2026, with shows at the same times. Prior to these performances, children can enjoy workshops and complimentary face painting sessions.

The circus building is equipped with shelters and backup power systems, ensuring it can operate safely even during crises. The rich history of Kyiv’s circus dates back to 19th-century traditions and is preserved through archives of documents, posters, photographs, costumes, and artists’ memoirs, underscoring its cultural significance.

Marking its 66th anniversary, the National Circus of Ukraine stands as a beacon of cultural preservation and adaptability amid contemporary challenges. Beyond maintaining cherished traditions, it continues to inspire audiences and provide a platform for performers to showcase their talents. The festival events and celebrations underscore the importance of circus arts in Ukrainian society, especially during times of adversity.
