The National Music Academy is being renamed: the name Tchaikovsky will be removed
Renaming of the National Music Academy of Ukraine
According to Главком: The Ministry of Culture of Ukraine has made a decision to rename the National Music Academy of Ukraine named after Tchaikovsky to the National Music Academy of Ukraine. This decision is an important step in the context of decolonization and the removal of symbolism associated with Russian imperial policy.
Justification for the Decision
The renaming of the academy is justified in accordance with the law of Ukraine 'On condemning and banning the propaganda of Russian imperial policy in Ukraine and the decolonization of toponymy'. The professional conclusion of the expert commission of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory also served as the basis for this decision.
According to new requirements, the rector of the academy must submit the charter in a new edition within the established period. It is also worth noting that the Kyiv City Council had previously appealed to the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy regarding the renaming of this educational institution. This decision has sparked public discussions and contributes to further decolonization of educational institutions in Ukraine.
The renaming of the National Music Academy is part of a broader process of decolonization in Ukraine, which includes reviewing the names of institutions that have ties to Russian imperial heritage. This decision underscores Ukraine's aspiration to form its own cultural identity, separate from imperial narratives. It is expected that such changes will reflect new values in the educational system and society as a whole.
