Founded in 705 AD by Fujiwara Mahito, this historic establishment has been managed by the same family for 52 generations, a testament to its enduring legacy and deep-rooted traditions.

A Dramatic Past Marked by Fire, Rockfalls, and Typhoons

The hotel’s long history is not without its share of dramatic events. Major fires broke out in 1909 and 1916, causing significant damage. In 1925, a massive boulder collapsed onto one of the buildings, and in 1982, a powerful typhoon struck the complex, forcing the main building to be relocated three times due to the destruction.

Set in a geothermal hotspot, the Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan complex offers natural hot spring water, with every bathroom directly supplied from these thermal sources. To make the journey easier, guests are picked up by a special minibus on the final leg of their trip, ensuring convenient access to the hotel.

According to the Guinness World Records, Keiunkan is recognized as the oldest continuously operating hotel in the world, and by some criteria, it is also considered the oldest operating business. This world record was officially certified in 2011, highlighting the site’s significance in hospitality history.
