Russia's Offensive Stalls: Minimal Territorial Gains Reported in Ukraine

Slow progress puts Russia in a corner

Russia's Offensive Campaign in Ukraine

According to Главком: Despite launching extensive aerial bombardments, Russia's offensive campaign in Ukraine has effectively stalled. According to the Ukrainian analytical group DeepState, Russian forces managed to seize only about 82 square kilometers of territory throughout June. The slow pace of advances in the Donetsk region highlights the difficulties the Russian military is facing. For instance, near Kostiantynivka, troops are advancing at an average rate of just 50 meters per day. Similar sluggish progress is occurring around Pokrovsk-70 meters daily-and near Sloviansk, where the rate reaches 90 meters per day. These minimal gains underscore the challenges Moscow is encountering on the battlefield.

Casualties on Both Sides

Furthermore, data from the U.S.-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) reveals that the casualty ratio between Russian and Ukrainian forces for the first half of 2026 stands at 8:1. This marks a sharp increase from the 2:1 to 3:1 ratio that prevailed for most of the full-scale war. Kostiantynivka remains the epicenter of the fiercest fighting. Over the four-year conflict, total military casualties-both killed and wounded-in Russia's war against Ukraine have surpassed two million.

  • Since the war began in February 2022, an estimated 1.4 million Russian service members have been killed or wounded, with 450,000 deaths.
  • Ukrainian military losses are estimated between 525,000 and 625,000 personnel, including 125,000 to 150,000 killed.

The situation on the front lines in Ukraine remains tense. Despite heavy costs and incremental territorial gains, Russia's offensive campaign faces serious challenges. The casualty data highlights the immense toll this conflict has taken on both sides as it enters its fifth year. Even with Russia's sustained efforts, the slow pace of advances in key sectors suggests resource depletion and strategic hurdles. As a result, the war continues to impact not only military forces but also civilians, the economy, and regional stability.
