Sumska hails from a deeply artistic family: her father, Viacheslav Sumsky, is a People's Artist of Ukraine, and her mother, Hanna Opanasenko-Sumska, is a Merited Artist of Ukraine. Her younger sister, Olha Sumska, is also a well-known actress.

Natalia Sumska graduated from the Kyiv State Institute of Theatrical Art named after Ivan Karpenko-Kary in 1977. That same year, she joined the company of the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater, where she continues to perform to this day. Sumska is married to actor Anatolii Khostikoev. She has two children: a daughter, Darina Mamai-Sumska, from her first marriage to Ihor Mamai, and a son, Viacheslav Khostikoev.
