Sleep Aid Without Medication or Operations: New Patch Enhances REM
According to НВ — Техно: Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have developed a soft, skin-applied wearable called NEUSLeeP that is meant to improve rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep without the use of drugs or surgical interventions. The device combines gentle ultrasound stimulation with electrodes, letting it track the brain's electrical activity in real time while the wearer sleeps.
Sleep difficulties affect a large share of people globally, making non-invasive options like this a growing focus of research. During tests with healthy participants, the patch was associated with longer REM sleep and greater heart-rate variability. MRI scans also pointed to positive changes in neural pathways involved in emotional regulation.
A patent application has already been submitted by the research team, and the next step is broader clinical trials that will include individuals with chronic insomnia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression. The scientific write-up was made public on August 9 at 22:00.
