Ethical Guidelines Established to Ensure Safe AI Use in Scientific Research
Integrating Artificial Intelligence into Scientific Work
According to Мінцифра: Researchers are increasingly utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to assist with data analysis, source gathering, and manuscript preparation. In response, a set of ethical guidelines has been developed to promote the responsible and safe application of AI within scientific research. This framework outlines acceptable and prohibited uses, offering clear direction for scientists, peer reviewers, and research institutions alike.
Permitted Uses and Restrictions
The new guidelines endorse AI for tasks such as:
- translation
- basic formatting
- coding
- organizing metadata
- idea development
However, certain practices are explicitly forbidden, including:
- crediting AI as a co-author
- producing fabricated information
- involving AI in peer review of others' work
While AI can generate content, ultimate responsibility for fact-checking and final outcomes remains with human researchers.
These recommendations were created with support from the "Digitalization for Growth, Integrity, and Transparency" (UK DIGIT) project, implemented by the Eurasia Foundation and funded by UK International Development. They provide tools for researchers to delegate routine tasks, advise reviewers to maintain confidentiality and avoid outsourcing expert evaluation to AI, and guide scientific institutions in developing data protection policies related to AI usage.
The adoption of AI in scientific research offers significant opportunities to streamline investigative processes but also demands adherence to ethical standards. These newly issued guidelines represent a vital step toward responsible AI integration, which is expected to strengthen trust in scientific findings and enhance their reliability. This, in turn, could positively influence the future advancement of science and technology.
As researchers increasingly rely on AI technologies, understanding the potential risks associated with their use becomes crucial. Recent discussions highlight how AI, particularly in the form of deepfakes, can manipulate perceptions and influence political decisions. For a deeper insight into these implications, you can explore how artificial intelligence shapes memory and impacts political choices.
