Study findings

According to НВ — Техно: A 26-year study by researchers in the United States and China, released on August 7, suggests that keeping blood pressure normal, avoiding diabetes, and staying smoke-free from age 45 to 65 may add an average of 12.6 dementia-free years. Participants who had all three risk factors, by contrast, typically developed dementia earlier and had shorter lives overall.

Among those with all three risk factors, women averaged 18.1 years without dementia, while men averaged 16.6 years. The authors also note that high blood pressure, diabetes, and smoking damage blood vessels, which is in turn associated with a higher risk of cognitive impairment.

Key risk factors

The researchers stress that the study does not prove these factors directly cause dementia, only that they are strongly connected to its likelihood. Future plans include examining how quitting smoking or lowering blood pressure in middle age might influence dementia risk. The key risk factors identified in the study are:

  • high blood pressure
  • diabetes
  • smoking

These results point to the importance of managing health in midlife, as it may meaningfully affect how many years a person lives without dementia. Vascular health in middle age appears crucial for preventing later cognitive decline. For English-speaking audiences, this reinforces the practical value of regular checkups and preventive care during these years.

“This study highlights the importance of preventive measures in midlife, as they can substantially reduce the risk of dementia.” - Researchers from the United States and China

Maintaining a healthy blood pressure range, regulating blood sugar, and avoiding cigarettes could become key elements of a lifestyle that improves both lifespan and quality of life. A better understanding of these links may inspire people to take greater control of their health during this critical period.
