NBU Policy Decisions and Currency Market Dynamics

The NBU's board has decided to keep the key policy rate unchanged at 15%. The central bank noted that inflation had been steadily slowing from June 2025 through January 2026, but has since begun to rise. Price pressures have intensified due to a challenging energy situation, a sharp increase in fuel costs, the effects of the hryvnia's depreciation, and rising wages.

Additionally, the NBU approved an operation to exchange non-cash foreign currency held by banks into cash. As of 09:10 on June 17, 2026, exchange rates at various banks were as follows:

  • Oschadbank:
    • USD: 44.65 / 45.00

    • CHF: 55.50 / 57.30

Overall, Ukraine's foreign exchange market remains volatile, with fluctuating rates that could impact the country's economic outlook.

The decline of the US dollar in Ukraine mirrors broader currency market trends and may stem from a combination of domestic and external economic factors.

The NBU's decision to hold the key rate at 15% signals a cautious monetary policy stance amid rising price pressures fueled by the energy crisis and higher fuel costs. This suggests potential headwinds for economic stability in the near term.
