New Commemorative Coin Launch

According to Главком: The National Bank of Ukraine has announced a special coin release to mark a century since the passing of Symon Petliura. This tribute honors the legacy of a prominent statesman, military leader, and political figure who played a key role in Ukraine’s history. Official sales of the new coin will begin on May 26, 2026, with a total mintage capped at 50,000 pieces.

Symon Petliura’s Historical Role

Symon Petliura served as the head of the Directorate of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and as the Supreme Commander of its armed forces. His name is closely tied to the struggle for Ukrainian independence during the revolutionary period of 1917–1921. He also held the position of the first Minister of Military Affairs in the Central Council. After the republic’s defeat, Petliura emigrated to France, where he was tragically shot dead by Soviet agent Samuel Schwartzbard.

The forthcoming coin features a distinctive design. On the obverse, a stylized portrait of Symon Petliura is set against a reflective background, with a branch-shaped element from his military tunic patch appearing to the left. The reverse side centers on a trident-a replica of the 1919 sleeve insignia. Encircling it are the inscription ‘100th Anniversary of Symon Petliura’s Remembrance Day’ and a wreath from a document bearing the letters ‘UNR.’ The coin’s design was created by artist Alisa Ivanova, with sculptor Volodymyr Atamanchuk bringing it to life.

The commemorative coin will be available for purchase through the National Bank of Ukraine’s online numismatic store as well as at the cash desks of authorized distributor banks.

“To honor the memory of an outstanding statesman, military leader, and political figure-the head of the Directorate of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and Supreme Commander of its forces, Symon Petliura-we are issuing a new commemorative coin for the 100th anniversary of his remembrance day,” stated the National Bank of Ukraine.

This coin release represents a significant step in preserving the memory of Symon Petliura, who left a lasting mark on Ukraine’s history. It underscores the importance of his fight for Ukraine’s independence and helps today’s generation learn more about his contributions to the formation of Ukrainian statehood. Beyond being a collectible item, the coin stands as a symbol of national remembrance and dignity.
