Securing Your Pension at 65: The Role of Voluntary Contributions

According to Пенсії (RSS): Ukraine's Pension Fund has outlined a voluntary insurance scheme for individuals who lack the required work history to receive a pension at age 65. For instance, a 64-year-old with only 14 years of qualifying service-one year short of the requirement-could use this option to bridge the gap. This initiative is particularly relevant in economies with significant informal employment or career breaks, where documented work history can fall short. Making voluntary insurance contributions could be the decisive step needed to start receiving pension payments.

Current legislation allows any individual aged 16 or older who is not already a pensioner to make voluntary social security contributions. The sole prerequisite is that the person must already be listed in the State Register of Insured Persons for mandatory state social insurance. Contributions are credited to the individual's insurance record for the specific month in which the funds are received by the Pension Fund.

The Benefits of Voluntary Pension Insurance

Voluntary contributions can be made continuously right up until the point a pension is formally applied for. The insurance record is calculated up to the month preceding the submission of the pension application. This provides a practical pathway for those with an insufficient work history to secure their entitlement to state pension benefits.

This program from Ukraine's Pension Fund is a crucial measure for many citizens approaching retirement age without adequate qualifying service. Voluntary pension insurance serves as a vital tool to ensure financial support in later life. Consequently, prospective retirees can leverage this opportunity to avoid future financial hardship and secure a more stable retirement.
