According to НВ — Техно: Scientists at the University of Liège have discovered that regular nighttime micro-arousals in middle-aged people could be an early marker of Alzheimer's disease susceptibility. Sleep disturbance is increasingly viewed as a possible warning sign for dementia, and this study adds weight to that idea. The findings, published in the journal Sleep, are based on sleep data from more than 500 healthy volunteers.

The researchers computed polygenic risk scores for two age groups: younger adults (18–31) and older adults (50–69). In the older group, frequent bursts of brain activity during sleep correlated with a high genetic risk for the pathology. No comparable connection was seen in the younger group. All participants were healthy, with no clinical symptoms of cognitive decline.

Why Sleep Quality Matters for Alzheimer's Prevention

The team focused on the locus coeruleus, a rice-grain-sized structure in the brainstem. They used a 7-Tesla MRI scanner for measurements. Abnormal protein deposits in this area may appear as early as adolescence.

"These micro-arousals are far from harmless. Certain profiles of them may promote the accumulation of toxic proteins associated with Alzheimer's disease and signal increased brain vulnerability," said Puneet Talwar.

The study authors argue that sleep monitoring is a promising preventive tool. They stress, however, that the relationships identified are statistical and cannot predict an individual's diagnosis with complete certainty.

"Sleep could become an accessible marker for detecting susceptibility to the disease in its early stages," remarked Gilles Vandewalle.

Lucie Leroux added: "Our research demonstrates that sleep quality is not just an indicator of health, but also a potential lever for therapeutic intervention." Consequently, the results may foster new strategies for Alzheimer's prevention, especially by improving sleep in middle-aged adults.

These findings highlight the role of sleep in neurodegenerative conditions and open fresh research possibilities. As Alzheimer's prevalence grows, early risk detection could meaningfully shift prevention and treatment, offering hope for a better quality of life in older populations.

Recent research highlights how excess weight can influence brain health, revealing a potential link between obesity and cognitive decline. Understanding these connections is crucial for developing comprehensive prevention strategies.
