German Defense Minister's Statement

According to Главком: German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has stated that his country cannot provide Ukraine with Patriot air defense systems from its own military stocks. He confirmed, however, that Germany will continue its deliveries of IRIS-T air defense systems, which have already become a crucial component of military aid to Ukraine. While Germany has previously supplied Ukraine with over a third of its Patriot arsenal, the German military is now awaiting replacements for these systems. This decision comes as Ukraine faces relentless missile and drone attacks, making air defense a top priority.

Germany is Ukraine's sole supplier of IRIS-T systems and has already initiated production of new units. The manufacturer, Diehl Defence, has opened a new production line for this purpose. The goal for 2026 is to produce at least 10 new IRIS-T air defense systems for Ukraine as part of a larger order totaling 18 units.

Air Defense Cooperation

During a conversation between Boris Pistorius and Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, the officials also discussed enhanced cooperation in air defense. Key topics included:

  • bolstering Ukraine's air defense capabilities;
  • Germany's participation in an innovative project to develop drone assault units.

Mykhailo Fedorov announced the creation of such units, highlighting the importance of this bilateral security partnership.

'Disproportionately large contribution' to supporting Ukraine - Boris Pistorius

Boris Pistorius noted that Germany's contribution to Ukraine's security assistance constitutes over 30% of all aid volumes announced for 2026. He also condemned the actions of the aggressor, characterizing them as 'cynical terror'.

It is worth noting that Ukraine's 475th Separate Assault Regiment (Code 9.2) recently conducted an operation in Kupiansk, Kharkiv Oblast. This underscores the intensity of ongoing combat in the region and highlights the critical need for sustained international support.

The German Defense Minister's statement illustrates the complex challenges Ukraine faces in securing its airspace amid continued aggression. The ongoing supply of IRIS-T systems remains vital for defending Ukrainian territory. Meanwhile, the escalation of fighting in the east emphasizes the urgency of international security cooperation and assistance.
