On Tuesday in Berlin, Chancellor Merz met with Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, where he drew attention to the dire situation in Ukraine. Despite ongoing Russian attacks, including strikes against civilian infrastructure, Ukraine continues its defense efforts.

"In personal conversations with numerous heads of state and government worldwide, I am striving to secure vital additional air defense supplies for Ukraine," Merz stated.

He described air defense as Ukraine’s greatest vulnerability and expressed hope that preparations for the upcoming winter, especially regarding energy supply, would strengthen the country’s resilience.

These negotiations are taking place in the lead-up to the European Council meeting scheduled for October 15-16 in Brussels. Merz also reflected on the September 26 meeting between Russian and German foreign ministers held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. He noted that the talks failed to produce constructive agreements, as Moscow showed no willingness to engage in dialogue aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

"We are also discussing targeted financial assistance to Ukraine’s budget and exploring every option to improve its air defense," Merz added.

Germany remains committed to supporting Ukraine, with Merz emphasizing, "We know this: Ukraine is part of Europe, and if Ukraine falls, peace and freedom throughout Europe will be at risk."
