German Chemists Develop Composite Material to Boost Performance and Lifespan of Zinc-Air Batteries
Advancements in Zinc-Air Battery Technology
According to НВ — Техно: Researchers at the Technical University of Darmstadt in Germany have unveiled an innovative composite that significantly enhances the efficiency of zinc-air batteries. This novel material, composed of iron, nickel, and carbon, stabilizes the internal reactions during charging, resulting in increased power output and longer operational life.
Zinc-air batteries are known for their remarkable energy density, capable of storing up to five times more energy than conventional lithium-ion batteries. Historically used mainly in hearing aids with limited rechargeable functionality, these batteries faced challenges in controlling chemical reactions during charging. Professor Jörg J. Schneider’s team has successfully addressed these issues, unlocking the potential for broader applications.
Technical Details of the New Composite
The breakthrough involves nickel ferrite nanocubes encapsulated by nitrogen- and phosphorus-doped carbon nanorods. This carbon coating not only facilitates improved electron and ion transport but also prevents the aggregation of ferrite particles by creating active catalytic sites. The material enables oxygen reduction reactions with minimal energy loss, delivering a catalytic power density of 54 mW per square centimeter-nearly double that of traditional platinum and ruthenium catalysts, which typically reach 28 mW.
Crucially, the stabilization of the triple interface-solid catalyst, liquid electrolyte, and atmospheric oxygen-ensures extended battery life. According to the researchers,
“the assembled secondary zinc-air battery can sustain over 300 hours of cycling in galvanostatic charge-discharge testing.”
The development of such advanced materials could revolutionize the rechargeable battery market, especially given the rising demand for efficient and environmentally friendly energy storage solutions. Enhanced power and durability open new avenues for zinc-air batteries in:
- electric vehicles,
- renewable energy systems,
- portable electronics.
This technology represents a pivotal step toward reducing reliance on traditional lithium-ion batteries, which face limitations and ecological concerns.
The innovations in battery technology are not limited to zinc-air systems. For instance, a recent collaboration between Porsche and Cylib has led to the creation of a battery cell that utilizes cathodes derived from recycled materials. This initiative highlights the growing trend towards sustainable energy solutions and emphasizes the importance of material efficiency in enhancing battery performance.
