Russian Military Aircraft Activity Near Alaska

According to Главком: NORAD command detected and monitored five Russian military aircraft operating within the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) off the coast of Alaska. The Russian planes did not enter the sovereign airspace of the United States or Canada. In response, NORAD scrambled its own fighter jets to intercept and shadow the aircraft.

Aircraft Involved in the Incident

The Russian aircraft identified in this operation were:

  • Two Tu-95 strategic bombers
  • Two Su-35 fighter jets
  • One A-50 airborne early warning and control plane

To conduct the intercept, NORAD deployed the following aircraft:

  • Two F-16 fighter jets
  • Two F-35 fighter jets
  • One E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft
  • Four KC-135 aerial refueling tankers

Such Russian flights near the Alaskan ADIZ are a recurring event. The ADIZ is a designated area of international airspace where monitoring is critical for national security. This region has seen increased strategic importance due to its proximity to the Arctic.

The incident underscores the ongoing military tensions between Russia and the United States, particularly in the Arctic region. Given Alaska's strategic location, NORAD maintains constant vigilance and readiness to defend North American airspace, a cornerstone of continental defense policy.
